{"id":4162,"date":"2019-09-19T09:44:01","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T09:44:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alexandraplayers.org.uk\/?p=4162"},"modified":"2019-09-19T09:44:01","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T09:44:01","slug":"harvey-at-75-press-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alexandraplayers.org.uk\/?p=4162","title":{"rendered":"HARVEY AT 75 &#8211; PRESS RELEASE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are thrilled to announce\nthat to continue our successful run of bringing Broadway\/West-end theatre shows\nto the borough, our next production will be&nbsp;<strong>HARVEY&nbsp;<\/strong>by&nbsp;<strong><em>Mary\nChase<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Mary Chase<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;introduced&nbsp;<strong>HARVEY<\/strong>&nbsp;to\nthe world in 1944. It was a huge success and in 1945, it received the Pulitzer\nPrize for Drama. The play ran for 5 years on Broadway and was also enjoyed by\naudiences in the West End when the production came to the Prince of Wales\nTheatre, London in 1949.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2019 marks the\nplays 75th anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many will\nrecount the unbeatable portrayal of&nbsp;<em>Elwood. P Dowd&nbsp;<\/em>in the\nmovie by American Actor,&nbsp;<strong><em>James Stewart<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 one of the\nmost honoured and popular stars in film history. &nbsp;The actor even revisited\nthe part, some years after the 1949 theatrical production in London and the\nmovie in 1950 &#8211; by playing the character once again in the West-End revival\nthat returned to London in 1975.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those of you\nunfamiliar with the film or play, it tells the tale of&nbsp;<em>Elwood P.\nDowd&nbsp;<\/em>&#8211; a gentle but wealthy drunk who starts having visions of a giant\nrabbit named&nbsp;<em>Harvey<\/em>.&nbsp;<em>Elwood<\/em>&nbsp;lives with his\nsister&nbsp;<em>Veta-Louise<\/em>&nbsp;and her daughter,<em>&nbsp;Myrtle Mae<\/em>.&nbsp;<em>Veta<\/em>&nbsp;worries\nthat&nbsp;<em>Elwood<\/em>&nbsp;has gone insane and in the process of trying to\nhave&nbsp;<em>Elwood<\/em>&nbsp;committed, admits that she too occasionally\nsees&nbsp;<em>Harvey<\/em>&nbsp;herself. The director of the Sanatorium &#8211;&nbsp;<em>Dr.\nChumley<\/em>, tries to reconcile his duty to help&nbsp;<em>Elwood&nbsp;<\/em>with\nhis own growing experiences with&nbsp;<em>Harvey<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Directed by\u00a0<strong><em>Louise Gaul <\/em><\/strong><em>(who last year directed our production of Terence Rattigan&#8217;s <strong>&#8216;The Deep Blue Sea&#8217;<\/strong>)<\/em> &#8211;
