We are thrilled to announce\nthat to continue our successful run of bringing Broadway\/West-end theatre shows\nto the borough, our next production will be HARVEY <\/strong>by Mary\nChase<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Chase<\/em><\/strong> introduced HARVEY<\/strong> to\nthe world in 1944. It was a huge success and in 1945, it received the Pulitzer\nPrize for Drama. The play ran for 5 years on Broadway and was also enjoyed by\naudiences in the West End when the production came to the Prince of Wales\nTheatre, London in 1949. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2019 marks the\nplays 75th anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many will\nrecount the unbeatable portrayal of Elwood. P Dowd <\/em>in the\nmovie by American Actor, James Stewart<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 one of the\nmost honoured and popular stars in film history.  The actor even revisited\nthe part, some years after the 1949 theatrical production in London and the\nmovie in 1950 – by playing the character once again in the West-End revival\nthat returned to London in 1975.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those of you\nunfamiliar with the film or play, it tells the tale of Elwood P.\nDowd <\/em>– a gentle but wealthy drunk who starts having visions of a giant\nrabbit named Harvey<\/em>. Elwood<\/em> lives with his\nsister Veta-Louise<\/em> and her daughter, Myrtle Mae<\/em>. Veta<\/em> worries\nthat Elwood<\/em> has gone insane and in the process of trying to\nhave Elwood<\/em> committed, admits that she too occasionally\nsees Harvey<\/em> herself. The director of the Sanatorium – Dr.\nChumley<\/em>, tries to reconcile his duty to help Elwood <\/em>with\nhis own growing experiences with Harvey<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Directed by\u00a0Louise Gaul <\/em><\/strong>(who last year directed our production of Terence Rattigan’s ‘The Deep Blue Sea’<\/strong>)<\/em> – HARVEY\u00a0<\/strong>features many familiar faces from\u00a0The Alexandra Players.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
