It is with great sadness that we report the death on January 12th of one of our most talented, respected and loved members, Eirona Wiseman, at the age of 97.
At the age of 17, Eirona just wanted to “go on the stage”, but her parents, in their infinite wisdom, persuaded her to get a proper job and go on acting as amateur, which she did for the next 70 years and never regretted.
She joined The Alexandra Players in 1973 and over a period of nearly 40 years, appeared in, and directed many productions including two of her own plays. When asked about directing, she said “I thoroughly enjoy the preparation of a play for production. It’s great to see the actors gradually developing the characters week by week. But when it comes to the performance itself and my job is finished, then I feel terrible, because they are up there acting and that’s what I would really like to be doing!” You did Eirona, with great success, for nearly a century.
A doyenne of the group, and an inspiration to many, Eirona will be very sadly missed by many members, and also by many of our regular audience, who remember her with great affection.
Thank you Eirona. xx
